“GCOP is such a key to living and working in Glendale,” said Rob Schoemig, owner of The Avenue Bar & Grill on Myrtle Avenue. That’s why Bob and toboggan gonflable partner Vytis Kezys put on the GCOP Golf Outing every year at Forest Park Golf Course. This year the event, held October 17^th, raised more than $5600 for GCOP, whose members patrol the streets every day to keep the neighborhood safe.

Update 11/6/2014: Brian Dooley of the Glendale Middle Village Coalition reports that $8,000 was raised at the Yerman’s fundraiser. 

Already almost halfway to its fundraising goal in less than two months, the Glendale Middle Village Coalition met to continue its campaign at Yerman’s Irish Pub last Friday.

The group, formed exclusively to fight the establishment of a homeless shelter at 78-16 Cooper Avenue, again drew hundreds to bouncy castle the event, using a raffle drawing as their central fundraising driver for the evening.

Throughout the event, donation envelopes and checks were passed along to group leaders Sal Crifasi, who owns Crifasi Real Estate, and Kathy Masi, president of the Glendale Civic Association.

To date, the GMVC has raised upwards of $50,000 towards their $130,000 goal to cover legal fees associated with fighting the shelter through the courts.

While most of the attendees of the night were concerned Glendale residents, one woman named Linda Brilliant commuted from her residence at 200 Tillary Street, a 200-bed single adult women’s shelter for women with mental illness and co-morbid substance abuse disorders.

Brilliant had read about the fundraiser in the Brooklyn Downtown Star newspaper and came to air her grievances with the shelter system. She said that she structure gonflable has been in and out of the shelter system for many years, and has never been able to find a place where she feels safe and secure.

Currently, she shares a room with eight other woman, and said that one of her roommates smokes cigarettes inside, while others have been smoking crack cocaine. For reporting these violations, Brilliant said she is harassed by her roommates.

“When they don’t want you in the room they pour water on your bed and they attack you,” she said. “When you speak up they shut you down. When things are going well for them they block you out.” [GR]

Community Affairs detective Thomas Bell reported this morning that a 46-year-old Glendale resident was struck and killed by a truck while trying to cross the street at 80th Street and Cooper Avenue this morning at approximately 5:56 a.m. No charges have been filed as the investigation is still ongoing at this time, according to police.

“I am deeply saddened by Mr. Martin Srodin’s tragic death, and I extend my condolences to his family and loved ones,” released Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley in a statement this week. “Too many pedestrians in our community have lost their lives in traffic accidents, and the Department of Transportation needs to be more proactive on busy intersections like 80th Street and Cooper Avenue. I will continue to push DOT to improve safety at this intersection.”

Amid growing tensions in communities slated for new homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities, Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Gilbert Taylor reached out to the Glendale Register last week to discuss the severity of the homelessness bouncy castle issue and discuss the proposed shelter on Cooper Avenue.

The site was proposed to DHS by Samaritan Village and would be specifically tailored for homeless families by including kitchens, recreational facilities and social services, especially as they relate to youth.

According to Taylor, the Glendale shelter would be built to meet DHS’s specifications for housing homeless families, unlike the emergency shelters that have recently opened in the borough, such as the one at the Pan Am Motor Inn on Queens Boulevard.

The commissioner, flanked by a few staffers, was clear to point out that it is not unusual for neighborhoods to be opposed to a shelter. But with inflatable water slide nearly 57,000 homeless now living in the five boroughs – a 40 percent increase over the past four years – Taylor said the department’s central focus is finding a bed for every man, woman and child.

“The city is facing a record number of homeless families and adults requesting shelter,” Taylor said. “As an agency, it is our mission and responsibility to provide shelter and related services to anyone in need.

“We hope that New Yorkers will find it in themselves to embrace these families with children in their communities as we help them get back on their feet,” Taylor added.

Police from the 104^th Precinct yesterday uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition in a garage and second-floor apartment in Ridgewood.

The arsenal belonged to Victor Rivera, 51, who was arrested for murder in Brooklyn in 1982.

Police received a tip that Rivera was storing the rifles, ,handguns and ammunition at his residence at 58-22 79^th Avenue.

On Tuesday, Sergeant Timothy Hinteman, the 104^th Precinct field intelligence officer, and Officers Mark Bublin and Matat Olag searched the premises and found hüpfburg kaufen two shotguns, three rifles, two assault rifles, a Tech-Nine, .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol and two .22-caliber revolvers.

Along with the guns, the officers also found over 700 rounds of ammunition.Rivera has been charged with over 25 different counts consisting of various weapons possession charges.

Work expected to last four months

For what the NYC Department of Design & Construction calls ‘for new building construction and for improvement to the City’s water main distribution system and fire protection,’ a dozen streets in the Myrtle Avenue / Union Turnpike section of Glendale will be torn up in order to put new water mains in. Work will start October 14^th and will go on for four months. Expect some traffic inflatable water slide disruption and lane detours while this work is being done.

The contractor is DeBoe Construction Company in Huntington, NY.

The streets include: 77 Avenue at 88 St., Myrtle Avenue between 81Ave. and 84 St., 85 St. between 77^th Ave. and Myrtle, 86^th and 87^th Streets between 77 Ave. and Union Tpk. 78 Avenue between 84 and 88 St., 79 Ave. from 87 to 88 St., 84 St. between 77 and 78 Aves., Union Turnpike – both sides, from Myrtle to 88 St. The last of the work will include a new water main on Myrtle Avenue between Union Turnpike and 85 Street.
