Strong Support For A School At Cooper Avenue Site. Also Dept. Of Buildings New Denial For Shelter Building

The week of August 12th was a busy one for the proposed Homeless Shelter for 125 families on Cooper Avenue in Glendale. State Senator Joe Addabbo fired off a letter to Schools Chancellor Farina and Homeless Services Commissioner Taylor asking for a structure gonflable school at the homeless site. Most understand that the school district is the most overcrowded in the city. Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilmember Liz Crowley and now State Senator Joe Addabbo support a school to be built at this site since it is not contaminated enough for the Homeless Shelter. “As far as I was concerned,” said Crowley earlier this month, “School Construction Authority said it was too contaminated. There is nobody better at sealing off a contaminated site and using it for people than is SCA,” she said.

LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR A SCHOOL AT COOPER AVENUE SITE:

Chancellor Carmen Farina, Tweed Courthouse, 52 Chambers Street, N.Y. 10004

Commissioner Gilbert Taylor, Department of Homeless Services, 33 Beaver Street, 17th, N Y, NY 10004

Re: Proposed Shelter at Cooper Avenue, Queens

Dear Chancellor Farina and Commissioner Taylor,

I hope this letter finds you well.

At this time, the location 78-16 Cooper Avenue in Glendale, Queens is being considered for a 125 family homeless shelter, operated by Samaritan Village and the Department of Homeless Services. Additionally, the location of the former Pan Am Hotel in Elmhurst is operational as a transitional facility for up to 200 families. Both of these sites are located in School District 24.

District 24 is one of the most overcrowded school districts in the City of New York. Having both of these locations operational as transitional housing inflatable water slide could result in hundreds of more school children in an already congested school district. At this time, I urge the Department of Education and Department of Homeless Services to reconsider these options and the size of the locations for the sake of my constituents.

I look forward to your timely response. Thank you.

Very truly yours,

Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.

New York State Senator, District 15

Also, the Department bouncy castle of Buildings issued another denial of the Plan for the shelter on August 12. See the screen shot of the DOB we page below.
