Hundreds of friends and family gathered at a Glendale street corner on Sunday afternoon to honor Steven Frosch, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) worker who was killed on the job in June of 2014.

“We are not only here to inflatable tent honor him, but honor his service,” said DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia  “This is an incredibly challenging job and one where people get hurt.”

Frosch was repairing a mechanical broom cleaner at the Queens West 5A garage in Maspeth when he was pinned and killed. He left behind a wife, two daughters and two sons, one of which recently celebrated his first birthday.

Just before Thanksgiving gonfiabili last year, that same garage was renamed in Frosch’s honor.

At Sunday’s ceremony, organized by Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, Frosch’s cousin Lisa Modica announced that the first fundraising event of the Steven Frosch Memorial Foundation, which will provide scholarships to area children who have lost a parent, will take place on June 12.

It will be a memorial 4K run followed by a family festival. For more information, visit thefroschfoundation.org.

Frank Ciccione, a childhood friend of Frosch who gave a moving and heartfelt speech at the event, said renaming the intersection was a fitting tribute to his friend.

“As far as I’m concerned, the city just realized what we always knew: this is Steve’s block,” he said. “He never spent a day trying to impress anybody, but he left the biggest impression on us all.
