DOE says they are “not interested” in shelter site

homelessshelter_blogA spokesperson with the Department of Education said the city has no intention of building a school complex at the at the Glendale homeless shelter site.

In response to an 365toy overcrowding issue in District 24 schools, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley began pushing for a school at the Cooper Avenue site more than two years ago.

Although hope for a school was recently revitalized at the site once Department of Homeless Services announced they passed an environmental study at the site, DOE spokesperson Marge Feinberg this week said, “We are not interested in the site.”

DHS spokesperson Christopher Miller said the city is still in preliminary phases of opening the new 125-family shelter, and has been unaware of any discussions with the DOE and School Construction Authority for the development of a school.

“We don’t have a contract yet, but bouncy castle we’re moving forward and this is something that is going to come to fruition,” Miller said of the current plan for a 52,000-square-foot Samaritan Village housing facility. “We know of no obstacles at this point.”
